Portraits of Children

Children are one of the most fun subjects to photograph, many people quote the old phrases "never work with children or animals" but I don't agree.

I am a father to 3 young children, and spend a large proportion of my time photographing portraits of children - so I am very experienced at getting the most out of children, this means they enjoy their time, they relax and be themsleves - thus giving us great portraits full of character (not pictures of children sat bolt upright posing falsely for the camera with a fake smile - that's not my thing)

I love children to be children, if that means they are laughing and joking, even being a bit silly - thats fine, I can work with that easily. They can bring the favourite toy(s) and props as this can help them feel at home, it also adds a lovely dimension to the photographs.

Some children are very shy when they first arrive. In this situation i forget the photograhy for quite some time and spend my attention making them feel at home and relxed, quite often i will get them involved in helping me set something up or do other things to help take their mind off things, to like and trust me and to relax - from their starting the photography and keeping them happy just works.

Keep their clothing nice and relaxed, their normal vibrant clothes will work great. They don't suddenly need to wear a shirt and trousers, it works better if they are just allowed to be themselves. Click here for more on what to wear
